A Father's Promise: Evgeny Anisimov Stands by His Son With Down Syndrome
A Russian father’s extraordinary commitment to his son is touching hearts around the world. When Evgeny Anisimov’s son, Misha, was born with Down syndrome in 2018, he made a life-changing decision to raise the child himself rather than place him in state care. Leaving behind a promising management career in Moscow, Evgeny reorganized his life around his son’s needs, becoming a devoted single father and sharing their journey to promote awareness, acceptance and inclusion for people with Down syndrome.
VOLGOGRAD, RUSSIA: A father’s decision to stand by his newborn son, despite the challenges of raising a child with Down syndrome, has touched people around the world. Russian father Evgeny Anisimov chose his son, Misha, over his marriage and promising professional opportunities, dedicating his life to ensuring that the child would grow up surrounded by love, care and acceptance.
Misha was born in August 2018 in Russia. Shortly after his birth, doctors informed his parents that he had Down syndrome, a genetic condition caused by an additional copy of chromosome 21.
The diagnosis came as an unexpected shock to the family. However, while the news brought uncertainty about the child’s future, it did not change Evgeny’s determination to raise and protect his son.
According to interviews published by Russian media and subsequent international reports, the couple had been looking forward to becoming parents after experiencing difficulties in having a child. But following Misha’s diagnosis, they faced a serious disagreement about how to proceed.
A Difficult Choice Between Marriage and Fatherhood
According to Evgeny’s account, his former wife was not prepared to raise a child with Down syndrome. The disagreement eventually led to the breakdown of their marriage.
Evgeny decided that he would take responsibility for Misha and raise him himself. He did not want his son to grow up without parental care simply because of a genetic condition.
The decision meant accepting a completely different future from the one he had originally planned.
In a 2020 interview with the Russian publication Takie Dela, Evgeny explained that his wife had agreed to provide financial support for their son. He also asked people not to direct hateful comments toward her.
Leaving a Promising Career in Moscow
Before Misha’s birth, Evgeny had been building his professional career in Moscow, where he worked in a senior engineering management position as a chief power engineer.
The arrival of his son changed his priorities.
Evgeny took parental leave and began learning how to care for an infant. He had to master everyday responsibilities, including feeding, changing diapers, preparing baby formula and arranging developmental activities.
He initially expected that balancing his professional and personal life would be extremely difficult. However, he gradually adapted to his new responsibilities.
After spending approximately 15 months on parental leave, he eventually left his Moscow position and returned to his hometown of Volgograd.
There, he found another engineering job, although at a lower professional level than his previous management position.
His decision was not simply about changing jobs. It involved reorganizing his entire life around his son’s needs.
In an interview, Evgeny described the importance of his decision by explaining that he had a good job in Moscow and promising career prospects, but could not leave his son because the child needed love and warmth.
Family Support Helped Him Continue
Although Evgeny took primary responsibility for raising Misha, he did not face every challenge alone.
His mother played an important role in helping him care for the child. She moved to support her son and grandson, sharing many of the daily responsibilities.
Friends and people within his wider community also offered assistance.
Evgeny received guidance from other parents, attended parenting classes and sought information about Down syndrome and child development.
He also received donated breast milk through a support network in Moscow that connected mothers who had surplus breast milk with families who needed it.
These experiences helped him understand that raising a child with additional developmental needs requires patience, knowledge, support and consistent care.
Helping Misha Develop and Learn
Evgeny also focused on providing Misha with opportunities to develop his physical, social and communication skills.
In his 2020 interview, he discussed arranging swimming activities, developmental sessions and specialist support for his son.
Misha also received developmental assistance through a local organization supporting children with additional needs.
Evgeny emphasized that caring for a child requires more than learning practical parenting skills. The daily routine can be demanding, particularly for a single parent who must balance employment, household responsibilities and childcare.
He acknowledged the importance of receiving support from family members and other parents who have similar experiences.
Turning a Personal Experience Into Down Syndrome Awareness
As Misha grew older, Evgeny began sharing their experiences on social media under the account associated with the name @evgen_tyz.
His posts documented everyday moments of fatherhood, Misha’s development and the challenges and happiness of raising a child with Down syndrome.
His story gradually attracted attention beyond Russia and was featured by international publications, including Goalcast, AmoMama and Live Action News.
Through his online presence, Evgeny has also sought to highlight the experiences of other families raising children with disabilities and developmental conditions.
His message is particularly directed toward parents who may feel frightened, uncertain or isolated after receiving a diagnosis concerning their child.
He has encouraged families not to lose hope and to seek the support and information they need.
Misha’s Journey as He Grows Older
In July 2025, the Russian publication T—J published another first-person account by Evgeny, in which he described raising Misha as a single father.
The account provided further insight into their family life and the responsibilities of caring for a child with Down syndrome.
It also demonstrated that his commitment to fatherhood continued well beyond the difficult period immediately following Misha’s birth.
Earlier reports indicated that Misha attended school and received speech therapy, reflecting the family’s efforts to support his development and education.
Their journey illustrates the importance of providing children with developmental conditions access to education, specialist support, family care and opportunities to participate in everyday social life.
Understanding Down Syndrome
Down syndrome is a genetic condition that occurs when a person has an additional full or partial copy of chromosome 21. It can influence physical development, learning and communication abilities.
However, the condition does not determine an individual’s personality, interests, potential or quality of life.
People with Down syndrome have different abilities and support needs. With appropriate healthcare, education, developmental services and an inclusive environment, many can lead fulfilling lives and participate actively in their communities.
Evgeny’s experience also highlights the importance of providing accurate information and emotional support to parents following a diagnosis.
A Father’s Message Beyond His Own Family
Evgeny Anisimov’s story is about more than a father making a difficult personal decision. It highlights the responsibilities of parenthood, the importance of family acceptance and the need to challenge misconceptions surrounding Down syndrome.
His decision to leave a promising management career in Moscow, relocate to Volgograd and reorganize his life around his son demonstrates the depth of his commitment.
Rather than allowing his son’s diagnosis to define their future, he chose to focus on Misha’s development, happiness and opportunities.
His journey offers an important reminder that children with Down syndrome deserve the same fundamental things as every other child: love, dignity, protection, education and the opportunity to build their own future.
Every child deserves to feel wanted. Every child deserves a family. And every child deserves the opportunity to live a life filled with love and possibility.

The claim that Evgeny faced a choice between his career and his son should be understood in the context of his decision to leave his Moscow management position and relocate, rather than an assertion that he abandoned all professional employment.
