American voters are preparing to make a consequential choice in the November 3, 2026, midterm elections, with economic pressures, immigration policy, healthcare and President Donald Trump’s leadership shaping the political debate.

The elections will determine control of the U.S. Congress for the final two years of Trump’s current presidential term. All 435 seats in the House of Representatives and approximately one-third of the Senate seats are up for election, alongside several state and local contests.
The results could influence the administration’s ability to advance legislation, approve budgets and implement its policy agenda.

The cost of living is a major concern for voters as they assess the country’s economic direction. Inflation, fuel prices, housing expenses and the relationship between wages and household costs have become important issues in the campaign.

A Pew Research Center survey conducted September 28 through October 4 found that 84% of registered voters considered the economy very important to their midterm vote. The same survey found that 73% viewed the future of democracy as very important, while 68% cited healthcare, 62% education and 59% immigration.

The findings indicate that voters are weighing both financial concerns and broader questions about the country’s institutions and public policies.

A Reuters/Ipsos poll reported on October 9 found that 78% of Americans surveyed, including majorities of Republicans and Democrats, blamed Trump’s policies for rising living costs. The poll surveyed 4,506 adults, with a reported margin of error of approximately two to three percentage points.

These findings reflect public perceptions of the economy and do not, by themselves, establish how much any individual government policy has contributed to price increases.

Trump’s popularity is another major factor in the election campaign. According to Pew Research Center’s October 8 report, 30% of Americans approved of the way the president was handling his job, while 68% disapproved.

The survey also found that 44% of registered voters viewed their midterm vote as a way to oppose Trump, compared with 19% who saw their vote as an expression of support for him.

The figures suggest that the president’s record is an important consideration for many voters. However, approval ratings and voters’ stated motivations do not guarantee a particular election outcome.
Republican candidates are defending their party’s congressional majorities, while Democrats are seeking to gain seats and increase their influence over federal legislation and oversight.
