Trump Offers UFC President Dana White a Surprising Role as White House Press Secretary
President Donald Trump says he offered UFC chief Dana White the White House press secretary job; White plans Monday talks.
President Donald Trump has offered Ultimate Fighting Championship (UFC) President and Chief Executive Officer Dana White the position of White House press secretary, triggering widespread discussion across American political and sporting circles. The announcement came on Saturday, November 7, when Trump publicly revealed the offer through his Truth Social account.
The unusual proposal has attracted attention because White is one of the most recognizable figures in professional mixed martial arts but has no established career as a government spokesperson. While Trump openly encouraged him to accept the position, White has not confirmed that he will take the job.
According to an Associated Press report published on November 8, White said he plans to meet Trump at the White House on Monday to discuss the offer. Speaking to reporters at a news conference in London, where he was attending a boxing event, White said he intended to travel to Washington after the event. He did not disclose what he and Trump had previously discussed or whether he was seriously considering the position.
When questioned about balancing the potential government responsibility with his existing business commitments, White responded that he already had several jobs. He added that he expected to have more to say after his meeting with Trump.
Trump announced the offer while visiting his golf club in Florida. In his Truth Social post, he described White as a fighter and warrior and praised his personality. He also encouraged White to bring several prominent mixed martial arts athletes with him as assistants.
The fighters named by Trump included Islam Makhachev, Khabib Nurmagomedov, Justin Gaethje, Daniel Cormier, Amanda Nunes and Kayla Harrison. Trump suggested that these athletes could help defend his administration against political opponents, using unusually combative language in describing their proposed involvement.
The suggestion of bringing professional fighters into the White House communications operation added another unusual dimension to the announcement. However, there has been no official confirmation that any of the named athletes have been offered government positions.
White also attracted attention through his social media activity. Before speaking to reporters in London, he shared Trump’s announcement and posted an image showing himself behind the lectern in the White House press briefing room. The accompanying words, “On to the next chapter,” prompted speculation that he might be preparing for a major career change.
However, the image does not establish that White has accepted the position. The Washington Post reported that the image was created or edited using artificial intelligence technology. It should therefore not be treated as photographic evidence of an actual appointment or official press briefing.
There have also been conflicting reports about White’s response. CNN reported, citing a source familiar with the matter, that White had declined the proposal. However, the Associated Press subsequently reported that White intended to meet Trump on Monday to discuss the offer. White himself did not publicly confirm an acceptance or rejection in his comments to reporters. Therefore, as of November 8, his final decision remains unclear.
Dana White has maintained a close relationship with Trump for many years. Their association began in the early 2000s, when Trump’s Taj Mahal casino in Atlantic City hosted UFC events. Their relationship became stronger after White publicly supported Trump’s 2016 presidential campaign.
White subsequently became a prominent supporter of Trump and appeared at Republican National Conventions in 2016, 2020 and 2024. He also attended campaign events and publicly praised Trump’s leadership. Trump, in turn, has frequently attended UFC competitions and appeared alongside White at major sporting events.
Their relationship received considerable attention in June 2026, when the White House hosted a major UFC event on its South Lawn as part of celebrations marking the 250th anniversary of American independence and Trump’s 80th birthday. The event brought professional mixed martial arts competition to an unusually prominent political setting.
The proposed appointment comes at a particularly challenging time for Trump’s administration. Republicans suffered major setbacks in the November 3 midterm elections, with Democrats winning control of both chambers of Congress, according to reports by the Associated Press and Reuters.
The election results have increased political pressure on the administration, with Democratic lawmakers expected to intensify scrutiny of government policies and decisions. Effective communication with journalists and the public is therefore likely to become increasingly important for the White House.
The administration has also experienced significant changes in its communications team. Karoline Leavitt left the press secretary position at the end of August. Her successor, conservative commentator Katie Zacharia, served for only five days before leaving the role in October. Consequently, the administration has faced difficulty maintaining a permanent chief spokesperson.
The White House press secretary is responsible for communicating the president’s positions, explaining administration policies and responding to questions from journalists. The role typically involves regular press briefings, media coordination and managing public communication during political controversies and national emergencies.
The position requires strong communication skills, political understanding, the ability to handle difficult questions and experience dealing with the national and international media. Appointing someone from the professional sports industry would therefore represent an unconventional choice.
White, meanwhile, has significant responsibilities within the sports and entertainment industries. As the head of UFC, he oversees one of the world’s most prominent mixed martial arts organizations. He has also been involved in expanding Zuffa Boxing, a separate combat sports venture backed by Saudi partners. Taking a full-time government communications position could raise questions about how he would manage those existing commitments.
The announcement has also renewed discussion about the relationship between sports personalities, political influence and American electoral politics. White has helped Trump connect with audiences who follow combat sports and online sporting personalities. His possible involvement in the administration could further strengthen the connection between the White House and the sports entertainment industry.
Nevertheless, no formal appointment has been announced, and the proposed role should not be confused with a confirmed government position. The upcoming meeting between Trump and White is expected to provide greater clarity about the president’s intentions and White’s willingness to accept the responsibility.
For now, the offer remains one of the most unusual developments in Trump’s latest White House staffing changes. Whether Dana White moves from the world of professional fighting into the center of American political communications will depend on the outcome of his discussions with the president.
