U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio told Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Saturday that the United States would not allow Iran to “hold the global energy market hostage.”

State Department spokesperson Tommy Pigott said in a statement that Rubio and Modi discussed the current situation in the Middle East. Rubio stressed that the U.S. would prevent Iran from disrupting global energy markets and said American energy exports could help diversify India’s energy supply.

India imports nearly 90% of its crude oil and about half of its natural gas from abroad, making it the world’s third-largest oil importer and consumer, according to FOX Business.

Meanwhile, Reliance Industries, which operates the world’s largest refining complex, reportedly purchased 5 million barrels of Iranian oil earlier this year after the U.S. temporarily eased sanctions on Tehran.
