Federal Judge Blocks Trump Administration's Actions on Voter Registration Ahead of Midterm Elections
A federal judge has temporarily blocked the Trump administration from pressuring state and local election officials over voter registration ahead of the November midterm elections.
A federal judge has issued a temporary order restricting the Trump administration's efforts to pressure state and local election officials over voter registration, creating a new legal challenge for President Donald Trump just days before the U.S. midterm elections. According to a Reuters report published on October 31, 2026, U.S. District Judge Trina Thompson issued the temporary restriction in California.
Under the court's order, the Trump administration cannot pressure state and local election officials to remove certain individuals from voter registration lists, invalidate ballots, or separate suspected noncitizen voters through the challenged enforcement measures. The lawsuit was filed by election-related organizations and other parties. They argued that the administration had placed excessive pressure on election officials by demanding access to voter registration information and challenging how voter records are maintained.
The judge's order aims to protect election officials' ability to carry out their responsibilities under existing laws and established procedures. The Trump administration, meanwhile, has taken a tougher position on identifying potential noncitizens on voter registration lists. However, being listed on a voter registration record does not automatically establish that someone has illegally cast a ballot.
The United States is scheduled to hold its midterm elections on November 3. Voters will decide the balance of power in the House of Representatives and the Senate, making disputes over voter registration and election procedures particularly significant. The court's decision adds another legal development to the ongoing national debate over voting rights, election administration, and the federal government's authority over state and local election processes.
