The White House turned into a festive Halloween celebration as President Donald Trump and First Lady Melania Trump welcomed thousands of children and families to the South Lawn in Washington, D.C., on Thursday, October 29, 2026.
The annual Halloween tradition brought together children dressed in creative costumes, parents, military families, law enforcement families, foster families and adoptive families. The president and first lady personally greeted young visitors, distributed special commemorative chocolates and joined families in celebrating one of America's most popular seasonal traditions.
The event, hosted by First Lady Melania Trump, attracted approximately 6,000 guests, according to media reports. The White House grounds were decorated with pumpkins, autumn leaves, spooky displays and a large illuminated harvest moon. Children had the opportunity to collect treats, take photographs and enjoy activities organized by several government departments and participating organizations.

The White House had announced the event four days earlier, confirming that it would run from 3:30 p.m. to 7 p.m. and include special activities for invited guests. The celebration was held as scheduled on October 29.
One of the main attractions was the special chocolate distribution. Trump and Melania handed out large chocolate bars wrapped with commemorative designs featuring the presidential seal and Halloween greetings. The treats also carried the names of the president and first lady, making them memorable gifts for the young visitors.
Children arrived wearing a wide range of costumes. Some dressed as superheroes, cartoon characters and popular entertainers, while others chose patriotic outfits representing important figures from American history. Barbie, Batman, Tigger and several founding fathers were among the characters described in the Associated Press coverage.

Parents accompanied their children throughout the celebration, taking photographs and enjoying the opportunity to meet the president and first lady. The event also provided a chance for children from military and law enforcement families to participate in a special celebration at the nation's most famous presidential residence.
The decorations played an important role in creating the Halloween atmosphere. The White House entrance and surrounding areas featured pumpkins, autumn leaves, decorative vines and seasonal displays. A particularly striking attraction was a large illuminated harvest moon above the South Portico, complete with silhouettes of flying bats.
The decorations gave the presidential residence a different appearance from its usual formal setting. The traditional white exterior, normally associated with official ceremonies, diplomatic meetings and government business, became part of a colorful Halloween environment.

Music added another dimension to the celebration. The United States Air Force Strolling Strings performed Halloween classics and modern songs as children moved through the grounds. The musical performance helped create a relaxed atmosphere for families attending the event.
Trump also attracted attention when he briefly danced to the popular theme music from the movie Ghostbusters. The moment added a lighter touch to the evening, with the president joining in the festive atmosphere before returning to the business of greeting visitors.
Another unexpected highlight was an aircraft flyover above the White House. A presidential aircraft passed over the celebration twice while Trump and the children watched. The president reportedly paused to point out the aircraft to the young visitors.
The flyover was intended as part of the Halloween festivities, but it also attracted attention beyond the White House grounds. Some residents in Washington were surprised by the aircraft's relatively low flight. According to The Washington Post, the plane flew at an altitude of approximately 400 to 1,000 feet, based on flight-tracking information.

The report said that the Federal Aviation Administration had coordinated the flyover and briefly stopped ground operations at Ronald Reagan Washington National Airport to accommodate it. Some residents expressed concern because they had received little advance notice. The Washington, D.C., Council also criticized the short notice given to people in the area.
The Halloween celebration also included activities organized by several federal agencies and private organizations. Rather than focusing exclusively on candy, organizers created opportunities for children to learn, play and explore different subjects.
The United States Department of Agriculture arranged a giant pumpkin photo opportunity and distributed small pumpkins supplied by American farmers. This activity gave children a chance to learn about agriculture while enjoying the seasonal decorations.
The United States Postal Service provided toy mail trucks and organized a special postcard station connected with Melania Trump's BE BEST initiative. Children could participate in the activity and learn about sending messages through the postal service.
The Department of the Treasury distributed coloring books promoting Trump Accounts, a savings initiative associated with the administration. The activity introduced young visitors to the idea of saving money and planning for their financial future.
The Center of Science and Industry also contributed to the event by providing science experiment kits. These kits were designed to introduce children to science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics through interactive activities.
The International Fresh Produce Association offered apples from Michigan, while the National Confectioners Association provided additional Halloween treats. Other participating organizations included America 250, NASA, the National Park Service, the United States Mint and the Secret Service.

The participation of military and law enforcement families was another important feature of the event. These families were among the groups specifically invited to attend through the White House arrangements.
Military families often experience demanding schedules because of deployments, training assignments and other responsibilities. Similarly, law enforcement families frequently deal with challenging work schedules and the pressures associated with public safety responsibilities. Events such as this provide children from these households with opportunities to enjoy special activities outside their parents' professional environments.
Foster and adoptive families were also included among the invited groups. Their participation reflected the White House's decision to make the celebration available to a wider range of families connected with government employees and public service communities.
The event also brought together children of administration officials and other invited guests, creating a large gathering of families from different backgrounds.
For Trump, the Halloween celebration took place during a particularly busy political period. The president had been traveling across the country to support Republican candidates ahead of the November 3, 2026, midterm elections. On October 29, he also attended a campaign event in South Carolina before returning to Washington for the Halloween festivities.
The White House celebration therefore provided a short break from the president's political schedule. It also allowed Melania Trump to take a leading role in a public family event as first lady.
White House Halloween celebrations are not new. The tradition has a history stretching back several decades and has continued under different presidential administrations.

According to the White House Historical Association, First Lady Mamie Eisenhower first publicly decorated the White House for Halloween in 1958. Her decorations included skeletons, jack-o'-lanterns and dried corn displayed in the State Dining Room. She also organized a Halloween lunch for the wives of White House staff members.
The Kennedy family later helped develop the tradition of hosting trick-or-treat activities for children, friends and staff members. Over the years, different presidents and first ladies have welcomed children to the White House, organized seasonal parties and distributed Halloween treats.
The Nixon administration expanded the celebrations with public events for children. Later administrations, including those of the Clintons and Obamas, continued the tradition in different forms. The first Trump administration also hosted Halloween celebrations, welcoming children and military families to the White House grounds.
The Biden administration continued the custom as well, with President Joe Biden and First Lady Jill Biden handing out candy during a Halloween celebration in 2022.
The October 29, 2026, celebration demonstrated how the White House continues to use seasonal events to bring families and children into the presidential residence. While the building is primarily known as the center of American executive power, its annual Halloween activities offer a different perspective on the institution.
For the children who attended, the experience was about much more than collecting candy. They had an opportunity to explore the White House grounds, enjoy special performances, participate in educational activities and meet the president and first lady.
The event also highlighted the participation of military, law enforcement, foster and adoptive families in a long-running American tradition.
As Halloween approaches on October 31, the White House celebration has once again brought together politics, family activities and seasonal entertainment. With thousands of visitors, special commemorative chocolates, creative costumes, musical performances and an aircraft flyover, this year's event became one of the notable family celebrations of the Trump administration.
