Dhaka witnessed a meaningful blend of remembrance and environmental commitment as a special tree plantation program was held to honor the fallen heroes of the Soviet Union during World War II. Marking the 81st anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945), the initiative brought together city authorities, diplomats, and community representatives in a shared tribute that also reinforces the importance of sustainability and international friendship.

A special tree plantation program titled “Garden of Memory” was held this morning at Dhanmondi Lake in remembrance of the heroic Soviet soldiers who sacrificed their lives during World War II. The event marked the 81st anniversary of victory in the Great Patriotic War (1941–1945).


The program was organized by Russian House in Dhaka, bringing together distinguished guests including government officials, diplomats, and representatives from various sectors. The Administrator of Dhaka South City Corporation and valiant Freedom Fighter, Md. Abdus Salam, attended program the Chief Guest.


The “Garden of Memory” is an international commemorative initiative that originated in Russia. It honors those who lost their lives in the Great Patriotic War through tree plantation activities conducted annually across Russia and other countries. Each tree planted symbolizes a life lost, serving both as a tribute to history and a contribution to environmental sustainability.


In his speech, the Chief Guest praised the initiative and highlighted the Government of Bangladesh’s commitment to environmental protection. He stated that the government has undertaken a plan to plant 2.5 billion trees over the next five years to combat climate change and promote a greener Bangladesh. Additionally, Dhaka South City Corporation has set a target to plant 300,000 trees between 2026 and 2030.


He further remarked that the “Garden of Memory” is not only a tribute to the fallen heroes of World War II but also a symbol of friendship between the people of Bangladesh and Russia, reflecting a shared responsibility toward protecting the environment.


The Administrator also extended sincere appreciation and gratitude to the Embassy of Russia in Dhaka and Russian House for organizing such a meaningful initiative in honor of those who sacrificed their lives for peace and freedom.


Among the distinguished attendees, Vyacheslav Sentyurin, Minister-Counsellor of the Russian Embassy in Dhaka, was present as Special Guest, while the event was chaired by Alexandra A. Khlevnoy, Director of Russian House in Dhaka.
