Moscow, August 15 (Reuters): The eyes of the world are now on Alaska, where President Donald Trump embarks on a historic mission—to bring an end to the war in Ukraine. On Friday, at a Cold War-era air force base in Alaska, Trump will meet Russian President Vladimir Putin. Many see this meeting as the greatest peace effort in Europe since World War II, aimed at ending nearly three and a half years of bloody conflict.

Trump, who has described the war as a “bloodbath,” firmly believes that a ceasefire would open the door to a new era of peace—not only for Ukraine, but for the entire world. Such an agreement could also establish him as a worthy candidate for the Nobel Peace Prize.

For Putin, the meeting is equally significant—to prove that Western attempts to isolate Russia have failed, and to restore Russia’s place at the top table of international diplomacy.

Although Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky was not invited to the talks, Trump has made it clear that no deal involving territorial handovers will be made without Ukraine’s participation. He has also supported the idea of security guarantees for Ukraine.

Kremlin sources indicate that Putin may be ready to compromise on ending the war if NATO halts further expansion eastward and some Western sanctions are lifted. However, the conditions for a full ceasefire remain strict. A possible compromise could be a suspension of the air war.

Putin has also recently raised the prospect of a new nuclear arms control treaty to replace the existing one, which is set to expire in February next year.

Trump remains hopeful yet realistic—he knows that stopping this conflict will not be easy. Still, if the meeting succeeds, he will be remembered in history not only as an American leader, but as one of the greatest champions of world peace.
