[Petaling Jaya, July 24] — Malaysian Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim has expressed deep concern over the escalating tensions surrounding the border clashes between Thailand and Cambodia, emphasizing that a peaceful resolution is essential to preserve regional stability.
Speaking at a press briefing after attending the ASEAN Semiconductor Summit 2025, Anwar said he is planning phone conversations with the prime ministers of both Thailand and Cambodia. “We have sent messages to both prime ministers, and we are hoping to speak with them this evening or tonight,” he said.
He further added, “Both Thailand and Cambodia are long-standing close allies of Malaysia and key members of the ASEAN bloc. From our perspective, this growing tension is very concerning.”
Active Role as ASEAN Chair
Malaysia currently holds the chairmanship of the 10-member ASEAN (Association of Southeast Asian Nations) regional bloc. As part of this responsibility, Anwar stated that Malaysia intends to play an active role in easing bilateral tensions.
“I believe peace is the only way forward. Both countries want to maintain positive relations with ASEAN, and we hope they are also interested in resolving this crisis peacefully,” he said.
Concerns Over Economic Impact of Tensions
When asked about the potential economic and trade impact of the border clashes on the ASEAN region, Anwar responded, “It may be a bit early for a full assessment, but we remain hopeful.” He added, “Both nations have their national interests, but with mutual understanding, the tensions can be eased.”
