Trump Leaves Netanyahu Endorsement Hanging with Call for Greater Rationality Ahead of Israeli Election
U.S. President has signaled that he is likely to endorse Israeli Prime Minister > in Israel’s upcoming election, while also urging the longtime leader to act more rationally amid regional tensions.
In an interview with Israeli public broadcaster KAN News, Trump said he would first evaluate the field of candidates but indicated that Netanyahu remains his preferred choice. “I’ll have to look at who’s running, but I like Bibi very much. I would be most likely to endorse him,” Trump said, referring to Netanyahu by his nickname.
At the same time, Trump offered a note of caution, saying, “I have a good relationship with Bibi, but he needs to be more rational. I am willing to meet with him. He’s doing a very good job; he’s got to be a little bit more rational.”
The comments come amid growing public differences between the two leaders over developments involving Iran and Lebanon, even as the United States continues diplomatic efforts in the Middle East.
Earlier this month, Axios reported that Trump sharply criticized Netanyahu during a phone call over Israel’s military actions in Lebanon, with one U.S. official describing Trump’s remarks as calling the Israeli leader “f---ing crazy.” Trump later acknowledged making the comment during an appearance on the New York Post’s “Pod Force One” podcast but emphasized that he still likes Netanyahu and works “very well” with him.
