Former Malaysian Prime Minister Mahathir Mohamad turned 100 years old on July 10, marking a rare milestone among global leaders. On this occasion, Mahathir shared his reflections and insights on democracy, modern civilization, and the future of the Muslim world, drawn from a lifetime of experience.
“Democracy is a man-made system—it is not perfect. If you want to get the most benefit from it, you must learn how to use it properly.” – Mahathir Mohamad
He strongly argued that multiparty systems lead to fragmentation, as everyone aspires to be a leader, resulting in political disintegration and eventual failure of democracy. According to Mahathir, the optimal structure for a democratic nation is to have two major political parties, which helps enable strong and stable governance.
From Physician to Premier: A Journey of Leadership
Born on July 10, 1925, in Alor Setar, in the Malaysian state of Kedah, Mahathir began his career as a medical doctor. He entered politics at the age of 21 by joining UMNO (United Malays National Organization). In 1981, he became Prime Minister for the first time and led the nation for 22 consecutive years. He returned to power in 2018, becoming the world’s oldest-serving Prime Minister at the time.
“I never imagined I’d become Prime Minister. But the times demanded it—there was a vacuum in leadership, and I was called upon.”
Still Active at 100: The Secret to Longevity
“I read, I write, I debate—I keep two things active at all times: my mind and my body.” — Mahathir
He attributed his long and healthy life to moderate eating, mental alertness, and the companionship of his wife, Dr. Siti Hasmah, who is now 98 years old.
“She’s not just my wife—she’s my friend and lifelong companion.”
The Future of Malaysia and the Muslim World
Mahathir emphasized that political stability, good governance, and education are the most critical factors for national development.
Regarding the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), he criticized its ineffectiveness, saying that the lack of unity in the Muslim world remains its greatest weakness.
“To make any decision, every country’s agreement is required—this is why we can’t even reach consensus on issues like Palestine.”
Legacy and Reflection
“I don’t judge my own achievements—history and the people will do that,” Mahathir said.
Yet he clearly stated that serving his country remains the greatest satisfaction of his life.
