BNP Chairperson and former Prime Minister Khaleda Zia has called for the protection of Bangladesh’s independence and sovereignty at all costs. She said, “We must ensure that the bloodshed of our brave souls and the tears of the mothers are never in vain.”

She made these remarks in a video message addressed to families of martyrs during an event titled “Mass Uprising 2024, National Unity and Democratic Journey.” The event was held to mark the first anniversary of the July mass movement. Khaleda Zia emphasized the importance of democracy, recognition of martyrs, and national unity.

Call to Compile List of Enforced Disappearances and Extrajudicial Killings

The former Prime Minister stated, “We must immediately prepare a list of those who became victims of enforced disappearances, killings, and extrajudicial executions under the Awami League regime.” She reminded that these tragedies are a dark chapter in history that cannot be ignored or left unaddressed.

Recognition and Rehabilitation for the Martyrs

Khaleda Zia called for the state to officially recognize those who were martyred in the July movement and to ensure swift justice for their killings. She also demanded dignified rehabilitation and a secure future for every family of the martyrs.

She said,
“The nation will forever remember their sacrifice.”

Call for Institutionalizing Democracy

In her message, Khaleda Zia stressed the urgent need to strengthen the foundations of democracy anew. She said,
“We must urgently work to institutionalize the democratic system. Restoring national unity, civil rights, and constitutional values is now the demand of the time.”
