Tehran, July 1, 2025 —
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi on Tuesday made it clear that Tehran seeks full security guarantees before resuming nuclear talks with the United States—specifically, assurances that no U.S. military or nuclear attack will be carried out on Iranian territory during the negotiations.
In an interview with CBS News, Araghchi said,
“I don’t think the talks will resume so quickly. Before deciding whether to return to negotiations, we must be certain that America will not carry out military attacks on us again during the discussions.”
He added,
“Considering all these matters, we need more time.”
Context Amid Israel-Iran Conflict and Ceasefire
These remarks come at a time when both Israel and Iran have suffered heavy losses in their conflict, and a U.S.-brokered ceasefire has been in effect since June 24.
Ongoing Discussions and Tehran’s Position
The White House announced on Monday that President Donald Trump’s Middle East envoy Steve Whitlock continues talks with Iranian officials. The main goal is to ensure the ceasefire, effective after 12 days of deadly clashes, is successful and lasting.
However, Tehran is emphasizing that a ceasefire alone is not enough—they will not participate in further talks without credible security guarantees from the U.S.
Araghchi stated,
“Iran will not easily back down from nuclear enrichment. Our nuclear program is a symbol of national pride and dignity.”
He further said,
“In this 12-day forced war, we have demonstrated and proven our ability to defend ourselves. If anyone attacks again, we will resist in the future as well.”
Israel-Iran Conflict: The Bloody Toll Over 12 Days
The conflict began on June 13 when Israel launched airstrikes on Iranian military, nuclear, and civilian sites, resulting in:
-
935 deaths in Iran
-
5,332 injured, according to the Iranian Ministry of Health
Iran retaliated with missile and drone attacks, causing:
-
29 deaths in Israel
-
Over 3,400 injured, according to Hebrew University of Jerusalem
The U.S. itself became involved by bombing Iran’s Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan nuclear facilities.
This conflict has pushed U.S.-Iran relations to a new low and complicated the path toward restarting nuclear talks.
From Tehran’s side, the message remains clear—“No dialogue until security is guaranteed.”
