"EU Leaders Call for Immediate Ceasefire in Gaza" – Brussels, June 27, 2025

Leaders of the 27 member states of the European Union (EU) have called for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. In a written conclusion from Thursday's European Council summit, the leaders stated:

“The European Council calls for an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the unconditional release of all hostages, paving the way toward a permanent end to hostilities.”

This appeal comes at a time when EU-Israel relations are facing significant challenges over alleged human rights violations. The EU's diplomatic service recently indicated that Israel appears to be failing in its human rights obligations. This raises concerns over a potential violation of Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement, which mandates respect for human rights and democratic principles as the foundation of mutual relations.

The leaders wrote:

“The European Council takes note of the reports concerning Israel’s actions in light of Article 2 of the EU-Israel Association Agreement and calls for continued discussions based on developments on the ground in July 2025.”
