India Evacuates Citizens from Iran Amid Escalating Iran-Israel War in the Middle East
New Delhi, June 17, 2025 — As the Iran-Israel war intensifies in the Middle East, the Indian government has begun evacuating its citizens from Iran. On Tuesday morning, India’s Ministry of External Affairs issued a statement saying,
"In light of the safety concerns for Indian students residing in Tehran, they have been evacuated under the supervision of the Indian embassy."
The statement further advised that Indian nationals who are able to arrange their own transportation should leave Tehran and move to safer locations during this critical situation.
According to the ministry, arrangements have already been made to evacuate some Indian citizens through the Armenian border. Indian media reported that around 110 Indian students from the northwestern Iranian city of Urmia reached the Armenian border on Monday evening.
As Iran's airspace remains closed to civilian flights, India is currently unable to repatriate its citizens directly by air. Therefore, Indian nationals are being transported to neighboring countries such as Azerbaijan, Turkmenistan, and Armenia, from where they will be flown back to India.
In addition, around 600 Indian students have been relocated from Tehran to the city of Qom, which is considered relatively safer.
According to the Ministry of External Affairs, there are currently around 10,000 Indian nationals in Iran, including at least 6,000 students. All Indian citizens in Tehran have been urged to immediately contact the Indian embassy and register their location and contact details.
In light of the ongoing conflict, the Indian government and its embassy have issued advisories urging citizens to remain cautious and follow safety protocols.
