G7 Joint Statement Expresses Firm Support for Israel, Blames Iran for Middle East Instability
[Washington, June 17, 2025] — The Group of Seven (G7), an alliance of the world's seven leading economies, issued a joint statement late Monday expressing firm support for Israel and labeling Iran as the source of instability in the Middle East. The statement called for de-escalation of conflict and the establishment of peace across the region.
The ongoing Israel-Iran war, which began last Friday following an Israeli airstrike, has already triggered heightened tensions across the oil-rich region. Notably, instability in the Middle East has been growing since Israel launched a military operation in Gaza in October 2023.
The G7 statement declared:
"We affirm Israel’s right to self-defense. We reiterate our unwavering support for Israel’s security."
Regarding Iran, the statement said:
"Iran is the primary source of instability and terrorism in the region."
"Iran must never be allowed to obtain nuclear weapons."
Israel has claimed that it carried out a "preemptive strike" to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Since then, both nations have engaged in retaliatory attacks.
According to Iranian sources, at least 220 people have been killed so far, the majority of whom were civilians.
Israel has reported 24 civilian deaths.
Iran has repeatedly stated that its nuclear program is intended for peaceful purposes and that it remains a signatory to the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT).
Israel is not a party to the NPT and is widely believed to possess nuclear weapons, though it has never officially confirmed or denied it.
U.S. President Donald Trump announced that he is returning to Washington early from the G7 summit to deal with the Middle East crisis.
The United States stated that it was not directly involved in Israel’s attack on Iran but was informed of the plan beforehand. President Trump called it a “brilliant move.”
Issuing a warning, Washington stated:
“Iran must not attack U.S. interests or American soldiers in the region.”
The G7 added:
“We want this crisis to end in a way that paves the path for peace and a ceasefire in Gaza and throughout the Middle East.”
They also expressed readiness to coordinate efforts to maintain stability in global energy markets.
Meanwhile, on Monday, Israel struck Iran’s state broadcasting headquarters.
President Trump also posted on social media:
“Everyone should leave Tehran immediately.”
Additionally, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio held phone conversations with the foreign ministers of the United Kingdom, France, and the European Union to discuss the Iran-Israel war situation.
