Italy has called for an immediate end to the ongoing bombings in Gaza and demanded an urgent ceasefire.
Speaking ahead of the Weimar Plus foreign ministers’ meeting in Rome on Thursday, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani reaffirmed Italy’s commitment to NATO’s strategic goals and addressing the humanitarian crisis in the Middle East.
He stated:
“Our message is clear—this war must stop. We are working with Egypt and Qatar to support civilians. Our primary goal is a ceasefire. The message is clear: the bombing must stop, and the hostages must be released immediately.”
Tajani also mentioned that Italy would show flexibility in discussions about increasing NATO’s defense spending to 5% of GDP. He said the country is ready to contribute more, but time is needed.
His remarks:
“Reaching an agreement is crucial. Both flexibility and time are necessary. But I believe we can reach a deal to strengthen NATO and reinforce Europe.”
At the same briefing, incoming NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte emphasized the importance of continued support for Ukraine in its ongoing war.
He said:
“There is much work ahead. We must empower Ukraine to endure and ensure lasting peace, while also securing NATO’s own defense capabilities—not just for now, but for the next five to ten years.”
The Weimar Plus meeting brought together key European foreign ministers to coordinate strategies on regional defense and security.
