President Donald Trump issued a stern warning on Sunday, saying that anyone who spits at police or military personnel in Los Angeles will face “severe consequences.”

His remarks came just hours after he deployed 2,000 members of the National Guard to the city to crack down on anti-immigration protests.

Speaking to reporters in New Jersey before boarding Air Force One, Trump said, “They’ve started spitting now — it’s like their new weapon. And not just spit, they throw even worse things. When that happens, my message is clear: ‘They spit, we hit!’ I’ve told our forces — no one is allowed to spit in the face of the police or soldiers. Yet they do it often — come right up and spit in their faces. If that happens, they’re going to get hit hard.”

Violent Protests and National Guard Deployment
The protests in Los Angeles erupted after a raid conducted by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). On Saturday, demonstrators marched from Mariachi Plaza toward a federal detention center, chanting slogans like “ICE out of LA.”

Tensions escalated when National Guard troops began firing tear gas and pepper balls without any prior warning. Videos show streets filled with clouds of tear gas.

The Los Angeles Police Department (LAPD) reported that 27 protesters were arrested on Saturday for refusing to disperse despite police orders. LAPD spokesperson Norma Eisenman confirmed the arrests but declined to comment on the use of “less-lethal weapons.”

Potential Military Intervention
U.S. Vice President J.D. Vance described the protesters as “insurrectionists.” Senior White House advisor Stephen Miller called it “a violent uprising.”

Although Trump has not yet invoked the Insurrection Act of 1807, which would allow him to deploy active-duty military troops domestically, he didn’t rule it out.

When asked about it, Trump said, “It depends on what’s actually happening on the ground. We saw a lot last night in Los Angeles — a lot of violence. It could have been worse.”

Military Readiness
Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth stated, “If the violence continues, active-duty military may be deployed. Marines at Camp Pendleton are on high alert.”

These statements and developments indicate that the anti-immigration protests have now become a major national security and political crisis in the United States. The entire nation is watching the situation closely.
