Flight operations at Moscow’s Vnukovo and Domodedovo airports were temporarily halted due to security concerns following a drone attack. According to Moscow Mayor Sergey Sobyanin, Russia’s defense forces intercepted 10 Ukrainian drones targeting the capital.
Although no damage was reported within Moscow on Sunday (local time), a Ukrainian drone strike triggered a brief fire at the Azot chemical plant in the nearby Tula region, injuring two people. In Kaluga region, local governors reported the destruction of seven drones.
The Russian civil aviation authority (Rosaviatsia) stated on Telegram that flights were temporarily suspended at Vnukovo, Domodedovo, and Kaluga’s Grabtsevo airports to ensure safety, but were later resumed.
This drone attack comes amid a series of unprecedented Ukrainian drone raids deep inside Russian territory, including on military bases capable of launching nuclear weapons. In retaliation, Moscow has been intensifying its strikes across Ukraine in recent days.
Russian Strikes Cause Casualties and Damage in Ukraine
Early Sunday morning, Russian attacks caused widespread destruction across several Ukrainian regions. In the Dnipro (Dnipropetrovsk) region, drone, artillery, and rocket launcher strikes killed at least one person.
Mykola Lukashuk, head of the Dnipropetrovsk regional council, said:
“A man was killed in a guided aerial bomb strike in the Synelnykivskyi district. We extend our deepest condolences to his family.”
He added that five private houses and a kindergarten were damaged in the attack.
In the Nikopol district, a business, four homes, and power lines were also damaged.
Meanwhile, Russian forces attacked rural areas in the Zaporizhzhia and Kherson regions, injuring two more civilians, according to local officials.
Failed Peace Talks
Following the failure of recent peace talks held in Istanbul, Italy, Russia has ramped up its military campaign.
The only visible progress from the talks was a planned large-scale prisoner exchange, in which both sides agreed to release over 1,000 detainees.
However, on Saturday, Moscow accused Kyiv of not adhering to the agreed timeline for the exchange. In response, Ukraine accused Russia of “playing dirty games” and violating pre-set conditions.
