Mexican President Claudia Sheinbaum said on Monday that she has "very good" communication with U.S. President Donald Trump.
On Sunday, Trump had remarked that he had offered to send U.S. troops to help combat drug cartels in Mexico, and referred to Sheinbaum as “a terrific woman,” but added, “She’s very afraid of the cartels.”
When asked about these comments, Sheinbaum said she does not want to get into a media dispute with President Trump.
She said, “In less than three months of my administration, we’ve had more than five phone calls, and the communication has been good. Sometimes we don’t agree, but we say that over the phone, and there is mutual respect.”
“So I don’t want communication between President Trump and myself, or between the United States and Mexico, to happen through media statements,” she added.
On Saturday, Sheinbaum stated that she had rejected Trump’s proposal to deploy U.S. troops in Mexico, which was intended to help in the fight against drug cartels.
