Washington, April 8, 2025 (Reuters): U.S. President Donald Trump announced that starting Wednesday, an additional 84% tariff will be imposed on all goods imported from China. This was confirmed by White House Press Secretary Caroline Levitt on Tuesday. As a result, a total of at least 104% tariff will be placed on all products imported from China.
Previously, a 34% tariff increase on China had been announced as part of Trump's "retaliatory" tariff package. However, after China pledged to impose a 34% counter-tariff on U.S. goods by Tuesday afternoon, President Trump decided to raise the tariff by an additional 50%.
Levitt told reporters, "China and other countries who are unnecessarily mistreating American workers are making a mistake. President Trump is strong as iron, and he will not back down."
She further stated, "China wants to make a deal, but they don’t know how to do it." However, Levitt did not provide any information on what conditions China might agree to in order to reduce tariffs.

Last year, China was the second-largest source of imports for the United States, with $439 billion worth of goods imported from China, while the U.S. exported $144 billion worth of goods to China. The mutual tariff hikes could damage both countries' domestic industries and result in a significant loss of jobs.
Levitt also noted that despite multiple discussions with global leaders, Trump has shown no intention of suspending his plan.
