On Monday, President Trump stated that if China does not withdraw its plan to impose a 34% retaliatory tariff, the United States will impose an additional 50% tariff on China.
Trump said in a post on his Truth Social app, "Any country that imposes additional tariffs on the United States, on top of the long-standing tariff abuse they already have, will immediately face new and much higher tariffs, which will be significantly higher than the first tariffs imposed."
He further added, "Therefore, if China does not withdraw its 34% increase plan by tomorrow, April 8, 2025, the United States will impose an additional 50% tariff on China starting April 9."
On April 2, Trump announced retaliatory tariffs on nearly 90 countries as part of a decision to add a 10% tariff on all goods worldwide. Describing this announcement as "Liberation Day," the President stated that the new tariffs were necessary to balance trade between the U.S. and other countries.
In response to Trump's 34% tariff, which will take effect on April 9, Beijing announced last week that it would impose a 34% tariff on all U.S. goods starting April 10.
Wall Street is concerned about Trump's trade war, and economists have warned that this conflict could halt economic growth and even cause a recession.
Since tariffs are paid by U.S. importers, they typically affect consumers in the form of higher prices, increasing the likelihood of inflation rising again this year.
