Powerful Earthquake in Myanmar and Thailand: Death Toll Rises to Over 150, 730 Injured, Rescue Operations Ongoing

Bangkok — A powerful earthquake struck Myanmar and neighboring Thailand on Friday (March 28, 2025), destroying buildings, bridges, and a dam. At least 144 people have been killed in Myanmar, with images and videos from two severely affected cities showing extensive damage. In Thailand’s capital, Bangkok, a high-rise under construction collapsed, killing at least eight people.

The 7.7 magnitude earthquake had its epicenter near Mandalay, Myanmar’s second-largest city. The earthquake hit at around 12:00 PM and was followed by a strong 6.4-magnitude aftershock.

In a televised speech on Friday evening, Myanmar’s military government leader announced that at least 144 people had died and 730 were injured. "The death toll and the number of injured are expected to rise," Senior General Min Aung Hlaing said. Photos from the capital Naypyidaw showed multiple government buildings destroyed, and rescue teams were pulling bodies from the rubble.

Myanmar’s government reported a shortage of blood in the hardest-hit areas. The collapsed roads and bridges in Mandalay and other locations have raised further concerns, as rescuers may be unable to reach some areas. This level of destruction has already exacerbated the ongoing humanitarian crisis.

Bangkok:

In Bangkok, near the popular Chatuchak Market, a 33-story building under construction collapsed, trapping at least 81 people. Three people have been confirmed dead, and 90 others are missing. Rescue teams are still working to retrieve people from the area. Meanwhile, people from other buildings have been evacuated to safe locations.

The sound of sirens echoed throughout central Bangkok, and vehicles filled the streets, causing traffic congestion. Several areas of the city faced blackouts. The Thai government has declared a state of emergency in response to the earthquake's damage.

Situation in Myanmar:

In Mandalay, the earthquake caused extensive damage to several buildings, temples, and the former royal palace. Additionally, a dam burst, causing water levels to rise and posing further risks for low-lying areas. Communication in rural areas has been disrupted, making many regions dangerous for rescue teams to access.

Impact in China:

The earthquake was also felt in China’s Yunnan and Sichuan provinces. Homes and other structures near the city of Ruili, which is close to the Myanmar border, were damaged, and some people were injured. Chinese media reported that streets in Ruili were covered with debris, and several people were injured.
