French President Emmanuel Macron: Sanctions Against Russia to Be Lifted Only When "Peace Is Clearly Established"
French President Emmanuel Macron said on Thursday that sanctions imposed on Russia should only be lifted when "peace is clearly established." Speaking at a summit held in Paris, where more than two dozen heads of state and government gathered to discuss security guarantees for Ukraine, they agreed that once the war ends, a "coalition of willing" European countries could deploy military forces to provide security for Ukraine.
France and Britain have stated that, as peace is established, they will send a "credible force" to Ukraine. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky participated in the summit, where European allies agreed on a coordinated policy following Donald Trump’s proposal for direct talks with Russia.
Meanwhile, the Ukrainian president remarked, "Washington should have imposed sanctions on Russia when they rejected the 30-day ceasefire proposal." He further said, "Today, everyone understands that Russia does not want peace."
Credible Force
Along with strengthening Ukraine's own military, deploying European forces in Ukraine to ensure security and prevent new Russian attacks could be a key strategy. However, it is still unclear how this will be implemented.
Macron stated that France and Britain will attempt to send a "credible force" to Ukraine in the coming days. He said, "This is not the opinion of today, but it does not need to be agreed upon yet."
A French-British delegation will soon visit Ukraine, where they will discuss with Ukraine and plan for the deployment of a European force there.
