Mark Carney Announces Early National Election Just Two Weeks After Taking Office as Prime Minister
Montreal, Canada – Just two weeks after taking office as Canada's new Prime Minister, Mark Carney has announced an early national election on April 28. This election is seen as highly significant due to concerns over Prime Minister Trudeau's foreign policy and the relationship with U.S. President Donald Trump.
At a press conference on Saturday, Carney stated, “We are facing the greatest crisis of our lives, as the trade embargo imposed on us by President Trump's injustices threatens our sovereignty.”
This election had been expected to take place in October, but Carney is aiming to increase his influence as a top leader before the scheduled date. His party, the Liberal Party, which has been in power since 2015, has gained popularity recently following Trudeau's resignation and Trump’s threats.
However, recent polls indicate a fierce competition between the Liberal and Conservative parties. In January, the Conservatives were leading by a large margin, but the situation has since changed significantly.
Before the campaign begins, the Bloc Québécois party in Quebec and the New Democratic Party (NDP) led by Jagmeet Singh will also compete in the election and attempt to secure seats for themselves.
Additionally, the election will be contested for 343 seats, and the party that wins the most seats will form the government and have their leader become the prime minister.
In this election, Mark Carney’s main challenge is expected to come from Pierre Poilievre of the Conservative Party.
