The rise of extremist forces around the world is taking various forms in different countries. In particular, the growth of extremist forces in South Asian countries has raised concerns. The presence and activities of extremist forces in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh have become a challenge for politics, society, and security.
Visible Activities of Extremist Forces in Bangladesh: In Bangladesh, although extremist activities have been somewhat covert in recent years, there has been a noticeable increase in visible activities recently. During the interim government’s tenure, more than 80 attacks and vandalizations on shrines occurred. In several districts, events like women’s football matches being canceled, the prohibition of Lalon festivals, and incidents of harassment related to women's clothing have been reported in the media. The banned Islamist group Hizb ut-Tahrir has organized public marches after a long period of silence.
Although the government has declared a strong stance against extremism, it has faced criticism for its failure to prevent such incidents. The banned group Hizb ut-Tahrir has declared its agenda through marches and posters across the country. Prior to the 'March for Khilafah' campaign on March 7, 2025, their activities on social media have been widely discussed. The violence and harassment against women have increased, and there have been incidents of rape threats for women not wearing hijabs. Despite the government not addressing these issues, after a storm of protest on social media, the accused individuals were arrested.
The issue of women's rights and safety has become a significant topic of discussion in Bangladesh. Associate Professor Samina Lutfa of Dhaka University stated, "Recently, violence against women and street harassment have increased. The government must take strict action against such violence and ensure the safety of the general public."
Anti-Extremism Measures: What is the Government Doing? The Bangladesh government has declared a strong stance against extremist forces. However, there is criticism that the government's measures are insufficient. In August 2024, during a protest at the Kashimpur High-Security Jail in Gazipur, 209 prisoners escaped, including several members of extremist groups. Security analysts believe the government's steps are inadequate.
The rise of extremist forces in South Asia is not only creating political and security crises but is also having a deep impact on the social and cultural landscape. To fight extremist forces collectively in India, Pakistan, Afghanistan, and Bangladesh, it is crucial to take effective actions at both state and social levels.
President Donald Trump's Response: After taking office, President Donald Trump declared that when it comes to gender, he only recognizes men and women. Recently, following the death of ISIS's top leader Abu Khadijah in Iraq, President Trump hinted at a tough stance against extremism. Reacting to the incident, he wrote on his social media platform Truth Social, "Today, the ISIS fugitive leader was killed. Our fantastic fighters relentlessly pursued him. His unfortunate life has ended along with another ISIS member, in cooperation with the Iraqi government and the Kurdish Regional Government."
