Meeting in Saudi Arabia for Peace Agreement to End Ukraine-Russia Conflict, Zelensky and U.S. Envoy Steve Discuss
U.S. President Donald Trump's special envoy, Steve Witkoff, announced on Thursday that he is discussing a peace agreement framework to end the conflict between Ukraine and Russia, and a meeting will be held in Saudi Arabia next week with Ukrainian representatives.
Speaking to reporters at the White House, Witkoff said, "We are continuing discussions to organize a meeting with the Ukrainians," and indicated that the meeting could take place in Riyadh or Jeddah.
Meanwhile, Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said he will visit Saudi Arabia on Monday, where planned discussions will take place between senior Ukrainian and U.S. officials. He posted on social media, "After that, my team will stay in Saudi Arabia and work with our American partners. Ukraine is most interested in peace."
Trump also mentioned on Thursday that he will be visiting Saudi Arabia, and the visit could take place within the next month.
On February 28, a tense discussion took place between Trump and Zelensky at the White House, but since then, both sides have started working on a revenue-sharing mineral agreement.
On Tuesday, in a speech to a joint session of Congress, Trump stated that he had received a letter from Zelensky in which the Ukrainian leader said, "He is ready to sit at the negotiating table as soon as possible."
Regarding the discussions in Saudi Arabia, Witkoff said, "Our idea is to create a framework for a peace agreement and establish a foundation for a preliminary ceasefire."
