The United States is deeply concerned about democracy in Bangladesh
News Desk, CSB NEWS USA: We have repeatedly called for the release of political prisoners, the lifting of restrictions on freedom of speech and assembly, and the creation of an environment in which all parties can participate freely in the political process.
We believe that democracy is the best way to achieve lasting economic prosperity and well-being for the people of Bangladesh. We will continue to support courageous civil society and human rights activists, and we will continue to call for an end to the harassment and intimidation of journalists.
We will also continue to press for the protection of freedom of speech and assembly, and we will continue to call for meaningful political dialogue to pave the way for a more open, peaceful, and democratic society.
At the same time, we will work to find areas where Bangladesh and the United States have common goals. We want to move at the same pace as Bangladesh on these issues.
I have already begun to meet with members of the new government’s cabinet, where we can work together on issues of mutual interest.
For example, social and environmental issues are of great importance. My team and I want to continue to work with Bangladesh on climate change and, in particular, on the transition to clean energy.
Climate change affects everyone, both Americans and Bangladeshis. I hope that the excellent cooperation on which the people of Bangladesh have received more than 100 million COVID vaccines will be further expanded.
Security cooperation between our two countries and the region is also an important issue. Our militaries and law enforcement officials are looking for more ways to work together to combat security threats and mitigate the devastating effects of natural disasters. We also hope to play a role in modernizing the Bangladesh Army.
In the area of labor, the United States believes that Bangladesh’s laws, policies, and practices must be consistent with international standards. President Biden has set a global labor strategy that prioritizes labor rights around the world.
This strategy will guide us in encouraging Bangladesh to adopt laws and policies that allow workers to form and join democratic organizations without fear or interference. The United States is committed to supporting Bangladesh’s progress on labor rights, including through targeted development assistance.
The United States remains Bangladesh’s largest foreign investor and the single largest market for Bangladeshi goods and services. We can and should leverage our economic relationship for mutual benefit.
Finally, we will continue to work closely with the government to provide sustainable humanitarian assistance to the nearly 1 million Rohingya survivors of genocide and to facilitate safe, voluntary, dignified, and sustainable returns for all, subject to safe conditions in Myanmar.
The future comes one day at a time, and each day brings new opportunities. As you move towards that future, the United States stands with the people of Bangladesh, and we will always be there to support you on your journey.
