Washington, Thursday – British Prime Minister Keir Starmer visited the White House on Thursday for a meeting with President Donald Trump, where he will attempt to convince Trump that lasting peace in Ukraine is only possible if Kyiv and European leaders are involved in discussions with Moscow.
After shaking hands with Starmer, Trump responded to reporters' questions by saying, "We can. We will." He then gave a thumbs-up before heading inside for the meeting.
This marked one of the most important days of Keir Starmer's seven-month administration, as he will push hard to secure U.S. security guarantees for Ukraine. British officials are somewhat concerned but optimistic, as they believe Trump’s affection for Britain and the sincere relationship between Trump and Starmer could facilitate smoother discussions.
British officials hope that Trump’s respect for Starmer's straightforwardness and lack of pretension will encourage him to raise difficult questions without escalating the tension.
