Damascus: Syria’s new interim President Ahmed Al-Sharaa announced on Tuesday in his opening speech at the National Dialogue Conference that he plans to establish a transitional justice committee.

This statement comes after Al-Sharaa's Islamist group, Hayat Tahrir Al-Sham, ousted long-time President Bashar Al-Assad in December. Al-Sharaa emphasized the unity of Syria and the state’s exclusive right to hold weapons.

The National Dialogue Conference, held at the Presidential Palace in Damascus, marks the beginning of a crucial phase for the country’s future governance after a prolonged civil war.

During the conference, Al-Sharaa stated, "Over the past two months, we have been working on pursuing those who committed crimes against the Syrian people."

He further added, "We will work on forming a transitional justice committee to restore people's rights, ensure justice, and bring criminals to justice."

"The monopoly on weapons by the state is not a luxury, but a duty and an obligation," said Al-Sharaa. He also emphasized, "Syria is indivisible; it is a complete whole, and its strength lies in its unity."

Footage published by the official SANA news agency showed a large number of people arriving in Damascus to attend the conference.
