February 17, 2025: Ahead of the ICC Champions Trophy 2025, New Zealand secured a remarkable two-wicket victory over Afghanistan in their final One-Day International (ODI) warm-up match in Karachi, Pakistan.
Afghanistan batted first and posted a total of 305/9. Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored a brilliant 110 off 107 balls, while Sediqullah Atal added 52 runs. However, New Zealand found themselves struggling at 152/5 after 30 overs, with Rashid Khan taking two wickets. Nevertheless, Dean Conway (66) and Glenn Phillips (46) finished their innings, offering match practice before leaving the field.
Daryl Mitchell, ranked seventh on the ICC ODI batter’s list, played a key role for New Zealand, scoring an unbeaten 36. Mitchell and Matt Henry formed an unbroken 74-run partnership for the ninth wicket, securing the victory for their team.
Afghanistan, after being at 234/3, saw their progress slow down after Gurbaz’s dismissal. Although Hashmat Shahidi (40) and Ibrahim Zadran (32) helped increase the score, New Zealand's bowlers kept the pressure on and limited Afghanistan’s progress.
New Zealand wrapped up the match with 13 balls to spare, further boosting their confidence ahead of the Champions Trophy 2025 opener.
New Zealand will begin their Champions Trophy campaign on Wednesday, facing Pakistan, and will look to solidify their chances for the title.
