2024 was the deadliest year for journalists, with at least 124 reporters killed, nearly 70% of which were attributed to Israel, according to a report by the Committee to Protect Journalists (CPJ).

This marks a 22% increase in journalist killings compared to 2023, reflecting a rise in international conflicts, political instability, and global crime rates, CPJ stated.

According to the report, it was the deadliest year in CPJ's nearly 30-year history, with journalists being killed in 18 different countries. Among these, 85 journalists were killed in the Israel-Hamas war, of which 82 were Palestinians.

Six journalists were killed in Sudan and Pakistan, and five were murdered in Mexico, one of the most dangerous countries for journalists.

In countries like Haiti, gangs are now openly claiming responsibility for journalist killings.

CPJ CEO Jodie Ginsberg said, “Today is the most dangerous time to be a journalist, and the impact of the Gaza war on journalists has been more devastating than ever before.”

In 2024, 24 reporters were deliberately killed because of their work, and 43 freelancers were also among the victims. CPJ reported that freelancers, due to a lack of resources and security, were particularly vulnerable.

By the beginning of 2025, six journalists have already been killed, indicating that the situation may worsen further.
