Moscow, February 9 — U.S. President Donald Trump said he spoke on the phone with Russian President Vladimir Putin about ending the war in Ukraine. According to a report from the New York Post, this is the first direct communication between Putin and a U.S. president since the beginning of 2022.
Trump, who has promised to end the war in Ukraine, though he has not yet clarified how, said during an interview with the New York Post on Air Force One on Friday, "This is a bloody war, and we've had some very good discussions within our team." He added, "Putin wants the killing to stop."
Kremlin spokesperson Dmitry Peskov said, "There are many types of communication going on," but he could not directly comment on the New York Post report. Peskov added, "These communications are happening through various channels. I don't know, maybe I don't know everything, so I can't confirm or deny its accuracy."
Meanwhile, when Russia invaded Ukraine in early 2022, the war started in eastern Ukraine. Russia controls about one-fifth of Ukraine's territory and is advancing rapidly.
