U.S. President Donald Trump has proposed a voluntary resignation program for federal employees, offering them eight months of pay as an incentive to leave their jobs. The initiative aims to reduce the number of federal employees.

On Tuesday, millions of federal workers received an email outlining the proposal. The email stated that employees must decide whether they wish to participate in this “Delayed Resignation Program.” Those who agree to resign will receive eight months of pay.

Currently, there are over 2 million federal employees in the U.S., and the Trump administration expects at least 200,000—or 10% of the workforce—to accept the offer.

Senior officials from the Trump administration told CBC News, a media partner of the BBC in the U.S., that this initiative is expected to save the government approximately $100 billion.

Employees who wish to accept the offer have been instructed to reply to the email with “Resign” in the subject line. Those who agree will continue to receive their salaries and benefits, including other allowances, until September 30.

However, not all federal employees are eligible for this proposal. Workers from the Postal Service, the military, the Immigration Department, and the Department of Homeland Security have been excluded from this program.
