President Donald Trump is visiting Asheville, North Carolina, today, as the city continues its recovery efforts from the devastating impact of Hurricane Helene. The catastrophic storm struck last September, leaving a trail of destruction across the state and claiming the lives of more than 100 people. The estimated damage stands at $60 billion.

Relief efforts in response to Hurricane Helene have been a source of political controversy since the disaster. During his presidential campaign, Trump alleged that funds allocated by the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) for emergency relief were spent on migrants, leaving Americans affected by the storm without adequate support.

The then-Biden administration dismissed Trump’s claims as “false and baseless,” accusing Republicans of spreading misinformation about disaster relief efforts.

Speaking to reporters on the White House lawn today, President Trump said, “North Carolina has been treated very badly.”

Recently, Trump hinted at potential structural changes to FEMA. During his visit to Asheville, he is expected to assess the progress of relief efforts and reconstruction in the disaster-stricken areas.
