Patuakhali: The 28th Conference of Parties (COP), also known as the Climate Conference, will be held at Dubai Expo City from November 30 to December 12.
On Thursday (November 7) afternoon, the Patuakhali Youth Forum organized various programs and activities in Kuakata in connection with this conference, focusing on human rights, position, and a walk.
Hossibur Rahman, President of the Patuakhali Youth Forum, delivered a speech at this event, joined by Raju Ahmed, Deputy Inspector of Tourist Police, climate activist Jahirul Islam, Konok Akter, and others.
Speakers raised various demands, including ensuring the security and rights of marginalized communities in the coastal areas, the implementation of the Paris Agreement, the establishment of climate justice, greenhouse gas emissions reduction, and control of biomass burning. They also called for addressing the impacts of climate change and urged for unconditional financial assistance of 230 billion US dollars annually to help Bangladesh and other vulnerable countries.
In this conference, leaders of various countries discussed commitments based on climate change damage and security for economically disadvantaged countries. However, as of now, no significant actions have been seen at the COP conference, according to the speakers. If the global leadership supports the formation of a necessary fund without conditions for damage to economically disadvantaged countries, including Bangladesh, in the battle against climate change and risks, it could make this conference more than just a global tea party.
At this time, climate activist Jahirul Islam said that if even 1% of the money spent on wars and nuclear arsenals were allocated to the climate account, the affected countries would be able to help themselves. If funds for climate damage are provided to the climate-affected countries, they can actively contribute to establishing peace on earth.
