The Maryland Transportation Authority has confirmed this information, as reported by AFP on Tuesday.
Kevin Cartwright, communications director for the Baltimore City Fire Department, said the bridge collapsed into the Patapsco River after being struck by a large ship. At least seven people and several vehicles have fallen into the waterway.
However, no official information about casualties has been released yet. The Maryland Transportation Authority (MTA) posted on social media, stating that the I-695 Key Bridge has collapsed due to the ship’s collision.
The organization urged maritime traffic in the area of the Patapsco River to avoid it and designated the area as an accident site.
A spokesperson for the Baltimore Police Department stated that people could be trapped in the river.
