Burnham Says Israel Sanctions Show Britain Is ‘Showing Leadership’

Badenoch says Burnham is referring to the previous government. But that government was led by Keir Starmer, and it failed. She accuses Burnham of being “continuity Keir.”

Burnham replies:

“She talks about leadership. Let me tell her, and the whole House, where Britain is showing leadership.

For decades, Conservative and Labour politicians alike have stood at this despatch box and spoken about the importance of a two-state solution between Israel and Palestine.

But words from politicians about a two-state solution will remain just words unless they are backed by action. Leadership is about taking action.

Where there is injustice, where we need to correct unfairness, where people are being driven from their homes, losing their homes, and being intimidated in their daily lives, I pay tribute to the Father of the House [Edward Leigh], who yesterday welcomed the action this government is taking in this difficult and dangerous world.

Britain has to stand for something. Britain has to show leadership. Britain has to stand for fairness against injustice.

Where people are being bullied out of their homes and intimidated, we will always stand with the underdog and take whatever action we can to support them.

That is leadership on the world stage. It is Britain remaining true to what it has always stood for.

That is what the British people expect of us, and that is what this government will do.”
