Trump Envoys Arrive In Kyiv After Putin Talks In Renewed Ukraine Peace Bid

The United States has renewed diplomatic efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war, with President Donald Trump’s envoys Steve Witkoff and Jared Kushner arriving in Kyiv on Sunday for talks with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy and his negotiating team.

The Kyiv visit came a day after the two U.S. representatives held more than three hours of closed-door discussions with Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow. The meeting produced no immediate breakthrough, but Russian presidential adviser Yuri Ushakov described the talks as “constructive, frank and useful.”

According to the Russian side, the discussions covered the battlefield situation as well as broader economic issues and potentially significant joint projects between Russia and the United States. The White House said the meeting involved substantive discussions about possible next steps and that further developments could be announced in the coming weeks.

Zelenskyy said Ukraine was prepared to engage constructively in the negotiations and wanted to bring the war closer to an end. However, he emphasized that any lasting settlement would require credible security guarantees and a dignified post-war peace.

Territorial disputes remain among the most difficult issues. Moscow has demanded that Ukrainian forces withdraw from parts of the eastern Donetsk and Luhansk regions that remain under Kyiv’s control. Ukraine has rejected the demand, leaving the territorial question at the center of the diplomatic impasse.

Security arrangements for Ukraine are another critical issue. Kyiv has repeatedly sought firm guarantees against future Russian aggression, while the broader question of Ukraine’s long-term military and political alignment remains highly sensitive.

The renewed American diplomatic initiative comes as fighting continues on the ground. Russia and Ukraine have continued to exchange drone and missile strikes despite efforts to reduce attacks on their respective capitals during the negotiations.

Trump said he dispatched Witkoff and Kushner to determine whether meaningful progress toward a peace agreement could be achieved. He expressed optimism that the two negotiators could help produce a settlement.

The latest diplomatic push marks an attempt by Washington to revive peace efforts that had lost momentum in recent months. Its success, however, will depend largely on whether Moscow and Kyiv can narrow their differences over territory, security guarantees and the terms of a lasting political settlement.
