Explosion at German Train Station Injures Two Ukrainian Citizens

An explosion near the main train station in the southern German city of Augsburg early Wednesday injured two Ukrainian citizens, a 17-year-old girl and an 18-year-old man.

The blast occurred shortly after 3 a.m. local time and caused minor injuries. Police later found a suspicious package near the station and temporarily closed the facility as a precaution. The package was determined to be harmless, and the station reopened at about 10 a.m., with train services resuming.

Police spokesman Timo Küfner said it was too early to determine a possible motive and that an investigation was underway.

The incident came amid heightened tensions between Germany and Russia. A day earlier, German authorities accused Russia of being behind an attempted drone sabotage operation at Leipzig/Halle Airport, where an explosive-carrying drone was found near a Ukrainian Antonov cargo aircraft.

German officials said the device failed to detonate because of a faulty detonator. Russia rejected the allegations as “absurd” and warned of a reciprocal response to Germany’s measures.

Authorities have not established any connection between the Augsburg explosion and the wider tensions surrounding the Russia-Ukraine war.
