A major global shipowner is offering tanker crews an additional six months' salary to sail through the Strait of Hormuz as rising tensions between the United States and Iran continue to increase security risks in the region, according to a Bloomberg report published on Monday.
The report said Sinokor Group, one of the world's largest owners of supertankers, is offering the bonus to crews willing to complete a round-trip voyage transporting crude oil from Saudi Arabia or Iraq to the Gulf of Oman.
According to a company document reviewed by Bloomberg, the voyage is expected to take approximately one month.
"They are being offered huge bonuses by some companies," said Capt. Pradeep Chawla, chairman of GlobalMET, an organization that works with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) to promote seafarer training and education. However, he did not specifically refer to Sinokor Group's offer.
