Iran FM Heads to Moscow as Trump Urges Tehran to ‘Call’ for Talks Amid Stalled Peace Efforts
Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araqchi has traveled to Russia for high-level talks with President Vladimir Putin, as diplomatic efforts to end the ongoing conflict between Iran and the United States show little progress.
The visit comes at a critical moment in the nearly two-month-long confrontation, with Tehran seeking stronger backing from Moscow while indirect negotiations with Washington remain deadlocked.
Meanwhile, U.S. President Donald Trump signaled openness to dialogue but placed the responsibility on Iran to initiate contact, saying Tehran could “call” if it wants to negotiate. He reiterated that any potential agreement must ensure Iran does not acquire nuclear weapons.
Diplomatic momentum has weakened in recent days after the United States canceled a planned envoy visit to Pakistan, which had been expected to facilitate indirect talks.
Despite a fragile ceasefire, major disagreements persist. Washington is demanding limits on Iran’s nuclear program, missile development, and regional influence, while Tehran insists on sanctions relief and an end to military pressure, including U.S. and Israeli actions.
The conflict has also disrupted global energy markets, particularly due to tensions in the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, where shipping has been affected by Iran’s retaliatory measures against a U.S. naval blockade.
Iran has recently floated a proposal through mediators to ease tensions by reopening key shipping routes while postponing nuclear discussions—an idea that has yet to gain traction in Washington.
With both sides holding firm on core demands, analysts say Araqchi’s Moscow visit underscores Tehran’s effort to strengthen alliances as diplomatic pathways with the U.S. remain uncertain.
