Dual Citizenship Allegations Against Rahul Gandhi Trigger Legal Scrutiny

Allegations regarding dual citizenship against Indian opposition leader Rahul Gandhi have recently resurfaced, sparking renewed debate. The claim suggests that, in addition to being an Indian citizen, he may have held British citizenship. The controversy largely stems from reports that during the registration of a company in the United Kingdom in 2003, he allegedly declared himself as a British national. Petitioners have presented certain documents and emails in court to support these claims.

In this context, the Allahabad High Court (Lucknow Bench) issued a significant directive in April 2026. The court instructed the Uttar Pradesh police to file an FIR against Rahul Gandhi so that the matter can be investigated through a criminal inquiry. However, the court made it clear that this order does not confirm the truth of the allegations; rather, it indicates that the claims are serious enough to warrant a proper investigation under the law.

Earlier, a lower court had declined to take cognizance of the case, after which the matter was brought before the High Court. The court also sought responses from the central government and the Ministry of Home Affairs, adding further importance to the proceedings. As a result, the issue remains sub judice and is currently under investigation.

Under Indian law, dual citizenship is not permitted. If an individual voluntarily acquires citizenship of another country, their Indian citizenship may be subject to cancellation. Therefore, if the allegations are proven, it could have significant legal and political consequences, potentially affecting Rahul Gandhi’s eligibility as a Member of Parliament.

At present, however, no court has declared Rahul Gandhi to be a dual citizen. The matter is still under investigation, and a final verdict is yet to be delivered. Consequently, the issue remains both a legal process in motion and a subject of ongoing political debate.
