As part of the protests, demonstrators vandalized and set fire to the remnants of the residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman, the Father of the Nation, located at Dhanmondi 32 in Dhaka. Additionally, the offices of Bangladesh’s two leading national newspapers, Prothom Alo and The Daily Star, were attacked and vandalized by protesters, raising serious concerns over public safety and freedom of the press.

The violence erupted following the death of Sharif Osman bin Hadi, spokesperson of Inquilab Manch and an independent candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency. Hadi died on Thursday night around 10 PM while undergoing medical treatment in Singapore after being critically injured in a shooting incident in Dhaka.

Sharif Osman Hadi was widely known for his outspoken and revolutionary political stance against what he described as Indian dominance in regional politics. His killing sparked widespread anger, particularly among student groups and political activists, who poured into the streets of Dhaka and other cities.

Protests Turn Violent

What began as demonstrations demanding justice quickly escalated into violent unrest. Thousands of protesters, chanting religious and political slogans, clashed with law enforcement and targeted symbolic, historical, and media institutions.

The attack on Dhanmondi 32—considered one of Bangladesh’s most historically significant sites—has drawn strong reactions from political leaders, civil society members, and international observers. Media watchdogs have also expressed alarm over the vandalism of major newspaper offices, calling it a direct threat to press freedom.

Government Response and Growing Concerns

Law enforcement agencies have deployed additional police and security forces across key areas of the capital to restore order. Authorities say investigations are ongoing, and those responsible for the violence will be held accountable.

Bangladesh is now witnessing heightened political tension and public anxiety, as analysts warn that continued unrest could destabilize the country’s fragile political environment.

Sharif Osman Hadi’s death has not only deepened political divisions but also triggered one of the most serious episodes of street violence in recent months—placing Bangladesh under close international scrutiny.
