Political Revenge in Mirpur-2: Awami League Activists Accused of Assault Over Family’s Alleged BNP Ties

Dhaka, November 22, 2025: A politically charged attack took place in Mirpur-2 late on the night of November 21, when a group of individuals suspected to be affiliated with the Awami League (AL) assaulted local resident Md. Mahbub E Elahi at his home. The attack stemmed from rising political tensions following the November 17 court verdict, which reportedly angered sections of AL supporters.

According to family sources, a rumor had been circulating among local AL groups claiming that Mahbub’s elder brother, Mohammed Noor E Elahi, a former BNP Leader currently living in the United States, had secretly returned to Bangladesh. Acting upon this belief, the attackers stormed Mahbub’s residence demanding to know Noor Elahi’s whereabouts.

Mahbub’s wife, Fariha Binte Mahmud, confirmed that the assailants repeatedly questioned, “Where is your brother?” before violently attacking Mahbub inside their home.

Mahbub sustained significant injuries and was later admitted to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment. The family asserts that they have no involvement in current political activities and were targeted solely because of Noor Elahi’s prior affiliation with the BNP.

Local residents state that tensions escalated after the recent court verdict, with reports of rising intimidation and reprisals against individuals perceived to be linked to political rivals.

Political analysts suggest this incident reflects a growing trend of retaliatory violence and coercion, raising alarms about deteriorating political tolerance.

Police have stated they are prepared to investigate if a formal complaint is filed, while the victim’s family reports feeling unsafe following the attack.
