Trump Selects Five New Judicial Nominees in Alabama and Mississippi

U.S. President Donald Trump has quietly moved to nominate five new judges for federal trial courts in Alabama and Mississippi, continuing his effort to appoint a new wave of conservative jurists in Republican-led states.

In an unusual development, the U.S. Senate Judiciary Committee last week received completed questionnaires for six new judicial nominees, although only one had been previously announced publicly by the president. According to a spokesperson for Senator Chuck Grassley, who chairs the committee, the questionnaires were submitted on August 6, even though the Republican-controlled Senate has not yet formally received the nominations. The Senate is currently in recess until September.

With these latest candidates, Trump has now nominated 21 individuals for life-tenured judgeships during his second term. In his first term, he appointed 234 judges, significantly shifting the judiciary toward a more conservative stance.

The White House declined to comment on the nominations, and the five newly named nominees did not respond to requests for comment.
