Tensions in U.S. politics are escalating as a feud intensifies between tech billionaire Elon Musk and President Donald Trump. Following Musk’s recent announcement of launching a new political party called the “American Party,” Trump has reacted strongly and dismissively.
Speaking to reporters before boarding Air Force One on Sunday, Trump said:
“I think starting a third party is very ridiculous. America has always had a two-party system, and I believe a third party would only cause confusion.”
Later, in a post on Truth Social, Trump took a swipe at Musk, saying:
“It’s been painful to watch Elon Musk completely lose control over the past five weeks—he’s turned into a kind of train wreck.”
What Is the 'American Party'?
Last week on X (formerly Twitter), Elon Musk announced:
“We’re forming a new party called the ‘American Party’ that will challenge both Republicans and Democrats.”
He stated that the party's initial goal is to gain influence in both the House and Senate within the next 12 months, and hinted that it could eventually field a presidential candidate.
From Allies to Rivals
During the Trump administration, Musk was appointed to the Department of Government Efficiency (DOE), and the two worked closely together. However, their relationship has now turned sharply adversarial.
A key point of contention has been over electric vehicle (EV) policies. Musk advocates for expanding the EV industry with government incentives, while Trump opposes mandatory EV policies and has repealed certain tax breaks, saying:
“People should be free to buy whatever car they want—gas-powered, hybrid, or EV. We’re not forcing anyone.”
Analysts Weigh In
Political analysts suggest that Musk’s new party could pose a significant challenge to the mainstream Republican and Democratic parties—especially among younger and tech-savvy voters. However, some experts caution that past attempts to form a viable third party in the U.S. have rarely succeeded.
How this clash will influence the 2026 congressional elections and the 2028 presidential race remains to be seen. But one thing is clear: the growing rivalry between Trump and Musk has injected new drama into the American political landscape.
