[Washington, July 3, 2025] — The Trump administration has threatened legal action against CNN for reporting on a mobile app that allegedly helps users locate and potentially avoid U.S. immigration officers.

The app, called "ICEblock", alerts users to the presence of Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) officials nearby. CNN recently ran a report on the app, which administration officials claim is an attempt to "obstruct law enforcement."

Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem, during a visit to the newly opened ICE detention center “Alligator Alcatraz” in the Florida Everglades, said:

“We are currently working with the Department of Justice to hold CNN accountable under the law. They are encouraging the public to interfere with law enforcement operations. We will take legal action — what they are doing is absolutely illegal.”

In response, CNN issued a statement:

“This app is freely available to iPhone users and reporting on its existence is not a crime. Suggesting that we are promoting or endorsing it is incorrect.”

App creator Joshua Aaron told CNN that he developed ICEblock in response to what he described as the Trump administration’s “brutal immigration policy,” calling the app “a tool of resistance.” He further said:

“We are witnessing history repeat itself,” drawing a controversial comparison between Trump’s deportation policies and Nazi-era practices.

Meanwhile, Tom Homan, Trump’s border security advisor, sharply criticized CNN’s report:

“We want to send a strong message — we are committed to protecting our law enforcement officers.”

The controversy adds to mounting tensions between the Trump administration and major media outlets over immigration enforcement and press freedom.
