At the direction of President Donald Trump, an additional 700 Marine troops and 2,000 National Guard members have been deployed to control the ongoing protests in Los Angeles, the U.S. military announced Monday. These reinforcements will join the already deployed thousands of National Guard troops and hundreds of Marines in the city to handle the unrest.
Pentagon's chief spokesperson, Sean Parnell, stated Monday night on X (formerly Twitter), "These additional troops have been called to federal duty to assist Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and to ensure federal law enforcement officers can carry out their responsibilities safely."
On Saturday night, following President Trump's initial orders, 2,000 National Guard members were deployed to protect federal personnel and government facilities. On Monday, around 700 active-duty Marine troops were activated to support the Guard forces. A Defense Department official told CBS News that the Marines could arrive in the Los Angeles area as early as Tuesday.
California Governor Gavin Newsom sharply criticized the doubling of National Guard presence, calling it "irresponsible" and "disrespectful to our troops." On X, he wrote, "Many of the troops deployed in the first wave are still sitting inside federal buildings without any orders."
Newsom further stated, "This is not about ensuring public safety—it’s about feeding the ego of a dangerous president."
In recent days, massive protests have erupted in Los Angeles against ICE’s arrest operations. The federal government has accused local authorities of failing to prevent clashes and protect ICE officials—allegations that local and state officials have denied.
Local leaders have labeled the troop deployment "unnecessary" and warned that it could further escalate tensions in Los Angeles. On Monday, the city faced its fourth consecutive night of protests.
Meanwhile, the California state government has filed a lawsuit against the Trump administration, claiming the deployment is an "abuse of power" and an illegal takeover of Governor Newsom's authority over the National Guard
