“Those Who Approved President Trump’s Proposed ‘Big Beautiful Bill’ Made a Mistake — It’s Deeply Offensive,” Says Elon Musk
Washington | June 4, 2025
Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk has taken a strong stance against U.S. President Donald Trump’s controversial “Big Beautiful Bill.” On Tuesday, in a post on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Musk described the bill as “a vile abomination.” As Congress rushes to pass the bill and place it on the President’s desk by July 4, Musk’s sudden outburst has reignited political debate.
Musk wrote:
“Sorry, but I can’t take it anymore. Those who approved this should be ashamed of themselves: you know you made a mistake.”
He further warned:
“Come next November, we’re going to fire every one of you who betrayed the American people.”
Trump Camp Unmoved by Musk’s Criticism
White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt told reporters that President Trump is aware of Musk’s comments but they will not influence his position on the bill.
“The Bill May Be Big, It May Be Beautiful — But Not Both”
In an interview with CBS Sunday Morning, Musk said he was disappointed by the bill’s size and structure. He particularly criticized how it would increase the national budget deficit and disrupt the work of the Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — an agency operating under Musk’s oversight.
“I believe a bill can be big, or it can be beautiful, but not both,” Musk remarked.
Mixed Reactions Among Republicans
Musk’s comments have drawn divided responses from Senate Republicans.
-
Senator Rand Paul of Kentucky said, “The President should listen to Elon’s advice.”
-
Senators Ron Johnson (Wisconsin) and Mike Lee (Utah) expressed sympathy for Musk’s concerns.
However, others pushed back:
-
Senate Majority Leader John Thune (South Dakota) said, “I hope Musk will change his view once he analyzes the bill in detail.”
-
Senator Jim Justice (West Virginia) declared, “It’s Trump who got elected, not Elon Musk. I stand with the President — end of story.”
Personal Business Interests Behind Musk’s Reaction?
House Speaker Mike Johnson suggested Musk’s criticism may be driven by personal financial interest.
“I know the government EV mandates were important to him. But now those subsidies are being phased out because we’re cutting spending in that sector — and it’s affecting his business. That’s why he’s reacting this way,” Johnson said.
Musk Steps Away from Government Role
Last week, Musk announced he would no longer serve as a “special government employee” — a role that allowed him to work up to 130 days a year as a policy advisor under special provisions.
The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) — which played a central role in budget cuts and reducing federal agencies — was part of Musk’s broader vision. However, the Trump administration has fallen short of fully delivering on that promise.
A senior White House official told CBS News that the President and Musk still maintain a friendly relationship:
“This is not a breakup — he’s just returning to the private sector,” the official said.
